Excavators in one paragraph
Both of these dig. The difference is that one is built to get into places nothing else fits, and the other is built to move dirt at a working pace.
The John Deere 17G runs an expandable undercarriage that pulls in to 3 ft 2 in, which gets it through a standard side gate and into a backyard. That is unusual and it is the reason it goes out.
The Kubota U35-4 is twice the weight with 3 ft more dig depth and a hydraulic thumb included. If access allows it, it is the better machine and only $18/day more.
3 things we will ask you for
- How deep the work actually is, measured rather than estimated
- The narrowest opening anywhere on the route in, not just the entry gate
- What the ground is, whether that is finished slab, graded dirt or a slope
Send us a photo of the access route and the work area, and we will tell you straight which machine to take.

Common questions
What size excavator do I need for a residential job in Phoenix?
If it has to pass through a side gate, the 17G is the only option. If it can come in off the driveway, the U35 digs deeper and works faster for very little more money.
How much does it cost to rent a mini excavator in Phoenix?
The 17G is $242/day and the U35 is $260. Delivery is required on both, at the compact tier for the 17G and the mid size tier for the U35.
Does Summit Rentals rent full size excavators or backhoes?
No. We stock these 2 sizes and nothing larger, and we do not carry backhoes.
Do you have a breaker, auger or grapple attachment?
No. We stock 12 in and 18 in buckets, and the U35 comes with a hydraulic thumb. There is no hydraulic breaker in the fleet.
Do I have to call Arizona 811 before digging on my own property?
Yes. The locate is free, it is required by law, and it applies to homeowners as well as contractors. Wait for the marks before you break ground.
Can I rent a mini excavator for the weekend?
Yes. Day rates apply, and delivery runs Monday to Friday between 3 and 11 a.m., so plan the drop off for the Friday.
