Why the small one

The undercarriage retracts

The 17G runs on an expandable undercarriage. Pull the tracks in and it is 3 ft 2 in across, which gets it through a standard side gate. Push them out on site and it widens to 4 ft 2 in for stability.

That one feature is why this machine goes out. Almost nothing else that digs 7 ft down will fit down the side of a house.

It is a small machine with a small engine, so it is not a production digger. For trenching and footings at pace, take the Kubota U35-4.

Which term to book

At $242/day and $755/week, the week is worth taking from about the fourth day. The 4-week rate of $1,700 works out near 7 days of day rate.

It costs the same by the day as the 318G skid steer, which is worth knowing if you are deciding between digging and pushing.

What you get

Included with every rental

  • A current annual inspection, with the operator manual riding in the machine
  • A full function check before it leaves the yard, so nothing surprises you on site
  • A phone number that reaches the yard directly rather than a call center

Will it fit? 4 things decide it

Measure before you book
01

Gate width

3 ft 2 in with the tracks retracted. Measure your clear gate opening including the post and any latch hardware.

02

Overhead clearance

7 ft 10 in to transport. Check eaves, patio covers and low branches on the route to the dig.

03

Ground and turf

Rubber tracks are gentler than steel, but a loaded machine still marks turf and can rut soft ground. Plywood helps.

04

Dig depth and reach

7 ft 2 in down and 12 ft 6 in across. If your footing or line is deeper than that, you need the bigger machine.

Call Arizona 811 before you dig. The locate is free, it is required by law, and it applies to homeowners as well as contractors.

Buckets and the blade

12 in and 18 in buckets are available. The 12 is for utility lines and irrigation, the 18 for footings and general excavation.

The backfill blade is standard. It doubles as a stabilizer while you dig and as the fastest way to push spoil back into the trench afterward.

Operator rules

Excavators fall under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.602 for earthmoving equipment, and trenching work is covered separately by 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P.

  • Call Arizona 811 and wait for the locate before any digging starts.
  • A trench deeper than 5 ft needs a protective system designed under Subpart P.
  • Never leave the machine with the bucket raised or the blade up.
  • Inspect tracks, hydraulics and the quick coupler at the start of every shift.
  • Keep everyone clear of the swing radius, including behind the machine.

FAQ

Common questions

Will the John Deere 17G fit through my gate?

With the undercarriage retracted it is 3 ft 2 in wide, which clears most standard side gates. Measure your actual opening, because the post and latch eat into it.

What does the expandable undercarriage do?

It narrows the tracks for access and widens them for stability. You drive in retracted, then expand before you start digging so the machine is stable at reach.

How deep will a John Deere 17G dig?

7 ft 2 in at maximum. That covers irrigation, most residential footings and utility runs, but not a deep sewer tie in.

Can I pick up the John Deere 17G myself?

Delivery is required on this machine. At 3,790 lb it needs a properly rated trailer and tie downs, so we handle transport at the compact tier.
