How renting works

Rental terms
and
requirements

What you need to rent from us, how payment works and the training rules that sit with you rather than with the yard. Written in plain English.

Renting a machine does not certify anyone to operate it. Operator training and authorization are your employer's responsibility under OSHA.

Before you book

What we need from you

Renting from us is deliberately simple, with no account to open, no credit application and no membership to join.

What we do need is enough information to know who has the machine, where it is going and how it is being paid for.

  • A valid driver's license for whoever signs.
  • A phone number that reaches you while the machine is out.
  • The delivery address, or a tow vehicle if you are collecting.
  • A Visa, Mastercard or American Express card.
  • A signed rental agreement. It sets out the rental period, how you are paying and what you are responsible for.
  • You must be at least 21.
Payment

How payment works

All rental charges are paid upfront, before the rental starts. There is no deposit. Balances that go unpaid carry interest at 18% a year.

Rates on this site exclude sales tax and the damage waiver, and both are added at booking. Fuel is prepaid where the machine has an engine.

The damage waiver is 15% of the rental charge. It is added unless you send us a certificate of insurance before delivery that covers rented equipment and names Summit Rentals as loss payee. With the waiver, the most you pay for accidental damage is $2,500 per incident. It does not cover theft, tires, glass, misuse or running the machine outside its rating. It is not insurance.

Training

Renting a machine does not certify anyone

This is the part people get wrong most often, and it matters considerably more than any of the paperwork does.

Under OSHA, the employer trains and authorizes the operator, not the rental yard. The walkthrough our driver gives at drop off shows your crew the controls on that machine. It is familiarization, and it is not a training card.

Different machines sit under different standards, and a card for one of them does not cover another.

MachineStandardWho is responsible
Scissor lifts29 CFR 1926.451 and 1926.454, ANSI A92Your employer
Boom lifts29 CFR 1926.453, ANSI A92Your employer
Warehouse forklift29 CFR 1910.178Your employer
Telehandlers29 CFR 1926.602, ANSI B56.6Your employer
Skid steers and excavators29 CFR 1926.602Your employer

A sit down forklift card does not cover a telehandler. They are different machine types under different standards, and the load chart behavior is not comparable.

While you have it

Your side of the deal

  • Inspect the machine and run a function test at the start of every shift.
  • Do not exceed the rating on the plate, whatever the listing says.
  • Keep the machine on the surface it is rated for.
  • Call Arizona 811 before any digging. The locate is free and it is the law.
  • Secure the machine overnight. Theft while it is out is not covered by the damage waiver.
  • Keep it at the job site on your agreement. Moving it to another address needs our written OK. Every machine is tracked by GPS.
  • Tell us straight away if something breaks. Running a fault into the ground costs far more than a callout.
Returns

Getting the machine back to us

Have it ready before 7 a.m. on the return date, in the same place it was dropped, with the route to it kept clear.

Return it clean and in the condition it went out in, allowing for normal wear. A machine that comes back dirty carries a $75 cleaning fee.

If the machine is not ready at the return time, a 30% late fee is added. If it comes back on a later date, you pay rent for the extra days.

FAQ

Common questions

Do I need insurance to rent equipment?

If you have insurance that covers rented equipment, send us the certificate before delivery with Summit Rentals named as loss payee, and the damage waiver comes off. Without it, the 15% damage waiver is added. Call the yard at (602) 900-1845 and we will tell you exactly what is needed for the machine you want.

How old do you have to be to rent equipment?

You must be 21 to rent from us, and some machines carry their own age and training requirements on top of that, which sit with your employer rather than with us.

Do you rent to people without a contractor license?

Yes, and about half of what leaves the yard goes to people working on their own property, sized the same way we size anything else.

What happens if the machine breaks down?

Stop using it and call the yard straight away. Rent stops from the time it failed, as long as the machine comes back to us right away. Do not have it repaired yourself, because all repairs go through us.

Can somebody else operate the machine I rented?

Yes, as long as they are trained and authorized for that machine type by their employer, and the rental agreement stays in your name.
