What it is for

Stump grinders in one paragraph

Grinding a stump turns it into mulch where it stands. The alternative is digging it out, which means an excavator, a hole and somewhere to put a root ball that weighs more than you expect.

We stock 1 size for this, and it is the right size for residential and light commercial work. 20 HP, a carbide wheel and enough depth to plant or lay turf over afterward.

The thing that decides whether this is a rental job or a tree service job is usually access. At 32 in wide it goes through a standard gate, which most machine mounted grinders cannot.

Before you book

2 things we will ask you for

  • The narrowest opening anywhere on the route in, not just the entry gate
  • What the ground is, whether that is finished slab, graded dirt or a slope

Send us a photo of the access route and the work area, and we will tell you straight which machine to take.

Delivery

Pickup or delivery

This machine is light enough to collect from the yard yourself, so delivery is optional rather than required, and you will need a vehicle and tie downs that suit the weight.

If you would rather we brought it out to you, call the yard and we will price the run to your address before you book.

Pick it up from the yard during store hours, Monday to Friday 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., and bring it back during store hours on the return date.

FAQ

Common questions

How much does it cost to rent a stump grinder in Phoenix?

$145/day, $450/week or $1,015 for 4 weeks. A tow bar is $10 flat if you need one.

How long does it take to grind a stump?

A stump under 12 in across takes 15 to 30 min. 12 to 24 in takes 30 to 60 min. Bigger than that and you should plan on more than an hour each.

What size stump is too big for a walk behind grinder?

Over about 36 in across it stops being practical. At that point a machine mounted grinder is the right tool and it is worth calling us first.

Do I need training to operate a stump grinder?

No certification is required, but it throws debris hard. A full face shield, hearing protection, boots and long sleeves are the minimum, and everyone else stays well clear.

Do I need to call 811 before grinding a stump?

Yes. Irrigation, low voltage lighting and gas lines all run shallower than people expect, and a grinder wheel finds them quickly.

Can I pick up the stump grinder myself?

Yes, but it weighs 400 lb, so you need a ramp and a winch or the tilt deck trailer. It is not something to lift into a truck bed.
