Why the U35

The production digger

Twice the weight of the 17G and nearly twice the horsepower, with 3 ft more dig depth. This is the machine when there is real digging to do and access is not the limiting factor.

A hydraulic thumb comes with it, which turns the bucket into a grab. Rock, root balls, broken concrete and stumps all get picked up rather than pushed around.

Tight tail swing keeps the counterweight inside the tracks, so it works close to a wall or a fence line without swinging into it.

Which term to book

At $260/day and $795/week, the week is worth taking from about the fourth day. The 4-week rate of $1,970 works out close to 7.5 days.

It is only $18/day more than the 17G for twice the machine, so if access allows it, this is usually the better value.

What you get

Included with every rental

  • A current annual inspection, with the operator manual riding in the machine
  • A full function check before it leaves the yard, so nothing surprises you on site
  • A phone number that reaches the yard directly rather than a call center

Will it fit? 4 things decide it

Measure before you book
01

Access width

5 ft 7 in stowed. That is too wide for a standard residential gate, so plan the route in through a driveway or a removed fence panel.

02

Overhead clearance

8 ft 1 in to transport. Check gates, eaves and any patio structure on the way in.

03

Ground and turf

At 8,234 lb on rubber tracks it will mark turf and rut soft ground. Plywood or track mats are worth it on a finished yard.

04

Dig depth and reach

10 ft 5 in down and nearly 17 ft across. That covers almost all residential and light commercial digging.

Delivery is required on this machine. At 8,234 lb it is past what the tilt deck trailer we rent will carry, so we handle transport at the mid size tier.

Call Arizona 811 before you dig. The locate is free, it is required by law, and it applies to homeowners as well as contractors.

The thumb and the buckets

The hydraulic thumb is included rather than an extra. It closes against the bucket so you can grip and place material instead of only scooping it.

12 in and 18 in buckets are available. Take the 12 for utility trenching and the 18 for footings and volume.

Operator rules

Excavators fall under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.602 for earthmoving equipment, and trenching work is covered separately by 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P.

  • Call Arizona 811 and wait for the locate before any digging starts.
  • A trench deeper than 5 ft needs a protective system designed under Subpart P.
  • Never leave the machine with the bucket raised.
  • Inspect tracks, hydraulics, the thumb and the coupler at the start of every shift.
  • Keep everyone clear of the swing radius, and remember tight tail swing is not no tail swing.

FAQ

Common questions

Will the Kubota U35-4 fit through my backyard gate?

Usually not. It is 5 ft 7 in wide stowed, which is wider than a standard side gate. If gate access is the constraint, take the John Deere 17G instead.

What trailer do I need to haul a Kubota U35-4?

More than the tilt deck trailer we rent will take. At 8,234 lb delivery is required, and we transport it at the mid size tier.

How deep will a Kubota U35-4 dig?

10 ft 5 in at maximum, with almost 17 ft of reach at ground level. That covers sewer tie ins and deep footings.

Can a Kubota U35-4 break caliche?

With the thumb and 6,195 lbf of bucket breakout it will work through most caliche, though a hard layer is slow going. We do not stock a hydraulic breaker.

Which bucket should I take, the 12 in or the 18 in?

12 in for utility lines and irrigation where the trench should be narrow. 18 in for footings, pool work and anywhere you are moving volume.
