45 ft
articulating boom
lift rental
JLG 450AJ, Genie Z-45/25J RT or similar. The knuckle boom, with about 24 ft of up and over clearance and the shortest stowed length of our booms. The machine for sites with something in the way.
Rates don't include delivery, fuel, the 15% damage waiver or tax. See your out-the-door price with a quick quote. Delivery is required and billed each way.
It goes up, over and back down the other side
An articulating boom has a joint partway along, so the platform can rise, cross over an obstacle and drop down behind it. A straight boom cannot do that at any height.
Around 24 ft of up and over clearance is what lets it clear a parapet, an entry canopy, a block wall with planting behind it or a row of structural steel. The JLG reaches 24 ft and the Genie 23 ft 7 in.
We run more than one machine in this class, JLG 450AJ or Genie Z-45/25J, and we match one at dispatch. The JLG is the shortest boom on the yard at 21 ft 7 in stowed, and the Genie stows lowest at 7 ft, which makes this class the easiest of the three to get onto a tight site.

Which term to book
At $377/day and $980/week, the week is the better booking from about the third day. The 4-week rate of $2,240 works out near 2⅓ weeks.
It costs the same to rent as the 45 ft straight boom, so the choice between them is about the site, not the money.
Included with every rental
- A current annual inspection, with the operator manual riding in the machine
- A full function check before it leaves the yard, so nothing surprises you on site
- A phone number that reaches the yard directly rather than a call center
Will it fit? 4 things decide it
Measure before you bookGate and access width
7 ft 8 in on the JLG and 7 ft 6 in on the Genie, which makes this the widest class of the three. Measure the tightest point on the route in and tell us the number when you book.
Overhead clearance
7 ft 5 in stowed, lower than either straight boom, which is what gets it under canopies and through covered access.
Ground conditions
4WD with 45% gradeability. It handles graded dirt and real slopes better than most machines its size.
Setup room
Under 22 ft stowed on either machine. It needs a spot to sit with room to swing 355 degrees, but it fits places the straight booms cannot. The Genie has 0 tailswing, so the counterweight stays within the machine's footprint as it turns.
The 2 models are not identical, and the platform rating is where it matters. The JLG carries 550 lb and the Genie carries 500 lb. Work from the plate on the machine you are given rather than the higher of the two, and tell us at booking if your load is close to either figure.
Wind rating is 28 mph at the platform. That is a hard stop, not a guideline. Phoenix afternoon gusts in spring will exceed it, so plan tall exterior work for the morning.
A harness is mandatory in any boom lift, every time, with the lanyard clipped to the anchor point in the platform.
What the knuckle handles
The value of an articulating boom is entirely about what sits between the machine and the work. If nothing does, a straight boom reaches further for the same money.
| What is in the way | How the knuckle boom handles it |
|---|---|
| Roof edge or parapet wall | Up the face, over the edge, down onto the work |
| Entry canopy or drive through awning | Over the top instead of squeezing under |
| Block wall with landscaping behind it | Reaches in without driving on plants or irrigation |
| Structural steel and joists | Threads the basket between members a straight boom cannot pass |
| Parked equipment or stored material | Goes over the pile instead of waiting for it to move |
| Courtyard with one narrow way in | Fits through at 21 ft 7 in long and 7 ft 5 in high |
Operator rules
Boom lifts fall under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.453 and ANSI A92.22 and A92.24. A full body harness with a lanyard clipped to the platform anchor is required every time the platform is occupied.
- Your employer trains and authorizes the operator and keeps a written safe use program on site.
- Harness on and lanyard clipped before the platform leaves the ground.
- Inspect and function test at the start of every shift.
- 500 lb on the platform unless the plate on that machine says otherwise, including people, tools and material.
- Stop work at 28 mph of wind at the platform.
- Not an insulated machine. Keep the minimum approach distance from energized lines.

Common questions
Articulating or straight, which do I need?
If you can park with a clear line to the work, take a straight boom and get more reach for the money. If a wall, canopy, trench or stored material sits in between, only the knuckle boom will get you there.
Do I need to be certified to operate it?
Your employer has to train and authorize you under OSHA and ANSI A92, and keep a written safe use program. Renting the machine does not certify anyone.
Do I need a harness in a boom lift?
Yes, every time. Unlike a scissor lift, the guardrails are not the fall protection here. A full body harness with the lanyard clipped to the platform anchor is required.
Can I get it today?
Same day is possible when the machine is on the yard and the address is inside our normal run. Call the yard and we will tell you straight.
