Do you need a CDL to haul a skid steer in Arizona?

If you are planning a residential or commercial landscaping project and need to rent a skid steer, you will have to decide whether you can safely haul it to and from the equipment rental company yourself. Below are the common questions about hauling skid steers in Arizona, to help you plan your skid steer and trailer rental.

Do you need a CDL to haul a skid steer in Arizona?

Probably not, but it depends on the combined weight of your skid steer and trailer. If the combined weight of the equipment and the trailer is under 26,001 lb, you do not need a CDL to haul the load. A commercial driver’s license (CDL) is only required in Arizona for combination vehicles (truck and trailer) with a combined weight of 26,001 lb or more.

How much does a skid steer weigh?

At Summit Rentals we rent 2 sizes of skid steer:

• Bobcat S70 skid steer
• John Deere 318G skid steer

With an operating weight of 2,795 lb, the Bobcat S70 is the lighter of the two. The John Deere 318G is a larger, heavier duty machine with an operating weight of 6,542 lb.

Do I need a trailer to haul a skid steer?

Yes. A skid steer is slow moving construction equipment and is not permitted for road travel. It has to be loaded onto a skid steer or equipment trailer and towed from one location to the next.

Is loading and unloading a skid steer dangerous?

For a professional who knows what they are doing, loading and unloading a skid steer from an equipment trailer is relatively safe. For someone who does not know the safety procedures and basic precautions, loading and unloading is where most accidents happen.

Most skid steer accidents and injuries happen when driving onto or off a trailer that does not meet the height, weight and width requirements. That is why rental companies stress safety, and usually offer delivery and pickup for skid steers.
